Google's Lighthouse SEO score: what a 100 does and does not mean

explainer // , 5 min read, by Darthwares

The Lighthouse SEO score is a 0 to 100 grade for one URL, based on a short list of basic checks: does the page have a title and a meta description, can it be crawled and indexed, do links and images have descriptive text. A score of 100 means that page passes those checks. It does not measure content quality, and it says nothing about the rest of your site.

The short version

  • Lighthouse tests one URL at a time, not a site.
  • The SEO category checks basics such as title, description, crawlability and alt text.
  • 90 and above is good, 50 to 89 needs improvement, below 50 is poor.
  • Google states that Lighthouse does not score many factors that affect ranking.

What the SEO category checks

Lighthouse runs in Chrome DevTools and behind PageSpeed Insights. Its SEO category is a set of pass-or-fail audits. They include whether the document has a title and a meta description, whether the page returns a successful HTTP status, whether it is blocked from indexing, whether robots.txt is valid, whether links are crawlable and have descriptive text, and whether images have alt attributes.

Each audit is binary and the list is short, which is why many reasonable pages score 90 or higher.

What it does not check

Lighthouse's own documentation is direct about this: the checks cover basic search engine optimization advice, and there are many additional factors it does not score. In practice that leaves out most of what decides whether a page deserves to rank.

How to read the number

Lighthouse uses the same colour bands across categories: 90 to 100 is good, 50 to 89 needs improvement, and 0 to 49 is poor. For SEO, treat anything under 90 as a list of specific failed audits to fix rather than as a vague grade.

The Performance score is a different category with a different method. It is a lab measurement of loading and responsiveness on a simulated phone, and it varies from run to run.

Check your own score

It takes about a minute and needs no account.

  1. 01Open PageSpeed Insights at pagespeed.web.dev.
  2. 02Enter the URL of one important page and run the test.
  3. 03Read the SEO and Performance categories on the mobile tab.
  4. 04Open each failed audit. Every one names the element that failed.
  5. 05Run a site-wide audit to see whether the same problems repeat on other pages.

Common questions

Does a Lighthouse SEO score of 100 mean my page will rank?

No. It means the page passes a short list of basic checks. Ranking depends on relevance, content quality, links and many other factors Lighthouse does not score.

Is the Lighthouse score the same as Google's ranking score?

No. Google does not publish a ranking score. Lighthouse is a diagnostic tool from the Chrome team.

Why does my Performance score change between runs?

It is a lab measurement affected by network and device conditions at the time of the test. Run it several times and look at the range.
