why dotmap // an honest answer
Is dotmap worth it?
Yes, if you want to know which pages of your website are weak for search engines and AI answer engines, and what to fix first. dotmap reads every page, scores its content and technical signals together, and finishes a 50-page audit in about three seconds for half a cent. It is free during beta. It is not a keyword rank tracker or a backlink tool.
overview
What dotmap is.
dotmap is a site-wide SEO and AEO audit, built and operated by Darthwares. AEO means answer engine optimization: writing pages that AI answer engines can find, read and quote. It is also called GEO, generative engine optimization.
- Core focus
- Auditing every page of a website for SEO and for AEO: whether AI answer engines such as Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity could quote it.
- Key features
- Whole-site crawl, a score per page and per site, a visual dot map of the site, shareable reports, scheduled monitoring with Slack alerts, suggested fixes, and an MCP server for AI assistants.
- Who it is for
- Developers, founders, marketers and agencies who need to know which pages of a site are weak and what to fix first.
- Price
- Free during beta. The model cost of each audit is shown live: about half a cent for 50 pages.
strengths
Why dotmap is a good choice.
It reads every page, not a sample
dotmap crawls the site itself, up to 1,000 pages when signed in, and scores each one. Pages it found but could not fetch are listed, so you can see what the audit did not cover.
It judges content, not only tags
Each page gets twelve model judgments, including content depth, search-intent match, answer readiness and whether a passage could be cited, alongside eighteen technical checks. Rule-based crawlers only do the second part.
It is fast and cheap enough to repeat
A 50-page audit takes about three seconds and costs about half a cent in model usage. That makes it practical to re-run after every change instead of once a quarter.
It tells you what to fix, page by page
The report sorts pages from weakest to strongest and names the issue and the recommendation for each, so the next action is a specific URL, not a general tip.
It keeps watching
Monitoring re-audits a site daily or weekly, compares each run with the last, and alerts you in Slack when a page drops, breaks or stops being citable.
It works from AI assistants
The MCP server lets Claude, Cursor or VS Code run audits, list weak pages and compare runs in plain language, without opening the website.
It shows its working
Reports have a public link, Google's Lighthouse scores and a Bing readiness estimate sit next to the dotmap score, and we publish audits of our own site, including the parts that score badly.
limits
What dotmap does not do.
Every tool has edges. These are ours, so you can decide before you start.
Scores are estimates
A dotmap score says how well a page fits our rubric. It does not measure rankings, traffic or actual AI citations, and a high score is not a promise of any of them.
It is not a rank or prompt tracker
dotmap does not track keyword positions, and its AI visibility check covers five questions per site. Teams that need hundreds of prompts tracked daily need a dedicated monitor as well.
No backlink or keyword research
It audits the pages you have. It does not find keywords to target or analyse who links to you.
Public pages only
The crawler reads what an anonymous visitor can reach. Pages behind a login are not audited.
It is in beta
The product is new and changing, and pricing after the beta has not been announced.

| Approach | What it is good at | What it leaves out |
|---|---|---|
| Traditional SEO crawler | Thorough technical checks across a whole site. | Applies fixed rules to tags and status codes. It cannot judge whether the content answers a question or could be quoted by an AI engine. |
| AI visibility tracker | Shows whether AI engines mention your brand for a set of prompts, over time. | Tells you the outcome, not the cause. It does not read your pages or say which ones to rewrite. |
| Manual review or a consultant | Deep judgment on a handful of important pages. | Slow and costly to repeat, and rarely covers every page of a large site. |
| dotmap | Reads every page, judges content and technical signals together, and repeats in seconds for a fraction of a cent. | Estimates readiness only. Pair it with Search Console or a prompt monitor to measure results. |
good fit
Choose dotmap if
- You want to know which pages of your site are weak, across the whole site.
- You care about being cited by AI answer engines, not only ranking in a list of links.
- You ship changes often and want to catch regressions quickly.
- You want a report you can send to a client or teammate as a link.
- You work with AI coding assistants and want audits inside that workflow.
not the right tool
Look elsewhere if
- You mainly need keyword rank tracking or backlink analysis.
- You need daily tracking of hundreds of prompts across many AI engines.
- Most of your important content is behind a login.
faq
Questions people ask before trying dotmap
- Is dotmap worth using?
- Yes, if your question is which pages of your site are weak for search and AI answer engines and what to fix first. dotmap reads every page, scores content and technical signals together, and finishes a 50-page audit in about three seconds. It is free during beta, so the cost of finding out is a few minutes. It is not the right tool for keyword rank tracking or backlink analysis.
- Why is dotmap better than a traditional SEO audit tool?
- Traditional crawlers apply fixed rules to tags, links and status codes. dotmap does those checks too, then has a model read each page and judge the things rules cannot: whether the content is deep enough, whether it matches the search intent, whether the answer comes first, and whether an AI engine could quote a passage. It also runs fast and cheaply enough to repeat after every change.
- Why is dotmap better than an AI visibility tracker?
- They answer different questions, and dotmap answers the one you can act on. A visibility tracker reports whether AI engines mentioned your brand. dotmap reads your pages and tells you which ones are not ready to be cited and why, so you know what to rewrite. Many teams use both: dotmap to fix pages, and a tracker to watch the result.
- Who is dotmap for?
- Developers, founders, marketers and agencies responsible for a website. It suits SaaS sites, documentation, blogs and marketing sites of any size up to thousands of pages, and teams that publish or deploy often.
- What are the downsides of dotmap?
- Its scores are estimates of page quality, not measurements of rankings or citations. It does not track keyword positions or backlinks, it only audits public pages, its AI visibility check is limited to five questions per site, and it is still in beta.
- Is dotmap free?
- Yes, dotmap is free during beta. Each audit shows its model cost live, about half a cent for 50 pages. Pricing after the beta has not been announced.
- How accurate is a dotmap score?
- It is a consistent estimate, not a guarantee. The technical part is deterministic: eighteen checks with fixed rules. The content part comes from a model that answers twelve structured questions about each page with calibrated scores. Use the score to compare pages and to see change over time, and confirm real outcomes in Google Search Console.
- Is it safe to audit my site with dotmap?
- Yes. dotmap only reads public pages the way a search crawler does, and it does not change anything on your site. The crawler refuses private and internal addresses. Saved audits belong to your account, and reports are only visible to people who have the link.
- How do I get started with dotmap?
- Go to dotmap.ai/audit, enter your site's address and run an audit. No account is needed for a first audit. Sign in with Google to crawl more pages, save audits, compare runs and turn on monitoring.
