analytics // search + ai traffic
See what Google and ChatGPT actually send you.
dotmap counts the visits AI assistants refer to your site and shows them beside your Google Search Console clicks, queries and positions. Scores say what to fix; these numbers show whether the fix worked.

traffic // where visits come from
AI assistants are a source, not a referral.
Most analytics tools file a visit from ChatGPT under referrals, next to every blog that links to you. dotmap sorts each visit into one of five sources, so AI traffic gets its own line.
- AI assistants
- ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI and more, each named.
- Search engines
- Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo, Brave, Ecosia and others.
- Social
- X, LinkedIn, Reddit, Hacker News, YouTube, GitHub and others.
- Other sites
- Any other referring site, by its host name.
- Direct
- Visits with no referrer: typed, bookmarked, or from an app that sends none.

Questions about AI search analytics
- What is AI search analytics?
- AI search analytics measures the traffic and visibility a website gets from AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, as well as from search engines. dotmap does it in three parts: it counts visits that AI assistants refer, shows Google Search Console clicks and queries, and tracks whether AI answers cite the site.
- How do I track traffic from ChatGPT?
- Add a tracking script that reads the referrer and the utm_source parameter of each visit. ChatGPT links usually arrive from chatgpt.com or with utm_source=chatgpt.com. dotmap's script recognises these and shows ChatGPT as its own source, apart from search and social, with the pages those visitors landed on.
- Does Google Analytics show ChatGPT traffic?
- Only as a referral. Google Analytics lists chatgpt.com and perplexity.ai among ordinary referring sites unless you build a custom channel group for AI. dotmap groups AI assistants as a source of their own out of the box.
- Does Google Search Console show AI Overviews traffic?
- Partly. Clicks and impressions from Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted inside the normal Search Console performance report, but Google does not report them separately. Traffic from ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants does not appear in Search Console at all.
- Is all AI traffic counted?
- No. Some AI apps open links without a referrer, so those visits show up as direct. dotmap counts the visits it can attribute, which makes its AI number a floor, not a total.
- Does the dotmap tracking script use cookies?
- No. It sets no cookies and stores no IP addresses. A visitor is recognised only within one day, from a hash of the IP address, browser and site with a salt that changes daily. Bots are dropped, and page views are kept for 400 days.
- How do I add it to my site?
- Save the site in dotmap, open its Traffic tab and copy the one-line script into your pages. It works with single-page apps too: each change of address counts as a page view. To add Google data, open the Google Search tab and connect the Google account that can see the site in Search Console.
- Is dotmap analytics free?
- No. The Google Search and Traffic tabs are part of the Premium and Pro plans. Premium records up to 100,000 page views per site every 30 days and Pro up to 1,000,000. Audits remain free.
